About Catch A Northwest Wave
Our documentary, “Catch a Northwest Wave”, was initially conceived, as the Beach Boys song goes, “Let’s Get Back Together and Do It Again”! But, as we progressed, we realized it was that and more...we were recording the history and the lifestyle of surfing in NW Washington so it would not be lost to time.
In the 1960’s our generation experienced some of the most revolutionary and exhilarating times in lifestyles of the surfing, music and car cultures. NW Washington was not immune to any of these. Beyond surfing, we danced to the live rock & roll music of the Kingsmen (Louie, Louie), Paul Revere and the Raiders, Merrilee Rush and many others at the Aberdeen Armory, the Vasa Hall in Hoquiam, the Silver Seagull and Pat O’Day’s Dunes dance hall in Westport. Of course many of us remember the fabulous Beach Boys concert at the Hoquiam High School Gymnasium in February of 1964. We were fortunate to have experienced a kind of freedom that was new and unique to our generation!
We hope this documentary will help you experience and feel the joy of the surfing, the music and car cultures of our times. Go ahead...get out there and Catch a NW Wave!! And for those of you from the 60’s...let’s get back together and do it again!!
About the Filmmakers
NEWs
GOOD NEWS!! We are now planning for a new and interesting film documenting an adventure trip up the Washington coast from Oysterville to LaPush. The working title is “Catch a NW Coastal Crawl”. The itinerary is built around surfing, kayaking, hiking and fishing at spots along the way and enjoying food purchased locally at seafood markets and farmer’s markets and prepared by a popular chef...and surfer!
Feel free to check back periodically for updates on our Coastal Crawl! UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO COVID-19 WE HAVE HAD TO POSTPONE THIS ADVENTURE. CHECK BACK FOR UPDATES.
Larry Dittman
Larry started piper-boarding (today referred to as a skim-boarding) at Ocean Shores, WA in 1964 which inspired him to begin surfing at Point Grenville, WA in 1966. He enjoyed learning to surf with friends, the music of the times and the car culture. After retiring from a career in healthcare risk management Larry felt driven to document the history of surfing in Washington State, specifically the Point Grenville/Westport area in Grays Harbor. The result is a lifestyle documentary film looking at the surfing, the people, the music and the cars of “our” times...so that it is not lost forever!!
